Hurricane Melissa: Jamaica Prepares for Historic Impact

October 28, 2025

As Hurricane Melissa approaches, Jamaica is on high alert for what is being described as the strongest storm in the island's recorded history. Currently classified as a catastrophic Category 5 hurricane, Melissa boasts sustained winds of 175 mph (280 kph) and is projected to make landfall imminently.

The storm's trajectory is alarming, expected to traverse the island from St. Elizabeth in the south to St. Ann in the north. Residents are bracing themselves for potential devastation, with authorities warning of life-threatening storm surges that could reach up to 13 feet. Preparations have ramped up across the island, with widespread evacuations ordered in coastal areas and low-lying regions.

Reports indicate that the storm has already caused significant damage, leading to power outages, landslides, and fallen trees in its path. The slow movement of the hurricane, averaging just 5 mph, raises concerns about prolonged periods of heavy rainfall, increasing the risk of flooding and further landslides.

Local agencies, including the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), are urging residents to take the threat seriously, stock up on essential supplies, and remain indoors as the storm approaches. Emergency services are mobilizing to respond quickly to any incidents that may arise during and after the storm.

As Jamaica faces this unprecedented weather event, the resilience and preparedness of the island's communities will be put to the test. The government has promised to provide updates as the situation evolves, prioritizing the safety and well-being of all residents.

Stay tuned for more updates as Hurricane Melissa makes its way toward Jamaica.
